The Program

Education, training, and participation in theatre at Lakeland College takes
several different forms. Theatre is a discipline within the Creative Arts Division
which may constitute a major or minor within a broad liberal arts program of
study. Theatre is an appropriate field of specialization within the areas of
elementary or secondary education. Theatre courses are an option for students
majoring in other disciplines to meet distributional studies requirements.

The producing theatre is the laboratory for theatre students and is central to
all areas of study and activity within the discipline. Theatre majors and minors are
expected to excel in both the academic and production aspects of the program.

The theatre program offers all members of the Lakeland College community
opportunities to participate: as performers, as technicians, as audience members.
Auditions are open to everyone.

Independent Study projects are one dimension of the theatre program at
Lakeland College that makes it unique. These projects are intended as capstone
experiences for theatre majors and minors. Senior students who demonstrate
exceptional talent and maturity may be offered an opportunity to design or direct a
major production on the Bradley stage as a part of the college theatre season. Such
opportunities are rare at larger colleges or universities.

Work-Study positions are available each year for students who may want to
work as production personnel for all the events held in the Bradley Fine Arts
Building. These students gain valuable technical experience as well as a monthly
paycheck. Student staff personnel provide technical assistance for theatre
productions, band and choir concerts, and for all visiting professional artists,
performers, and convocation speakers.

Scholarships are available to students who have demonstrated a high level of
commitment to theatre as performers and/or technicians while in high school. The
Carol Channing Scholarship was established in 1990; the Ernest Borgnine
Scholarship was established in 1997. The generosity of these two legendary
performers, both of whom are honorary Lakeland College alumni, has allowed the
theatre program to provide this important financial assistance to qualified students.

The Lakeland College Catalog provides further information on the theatre
program, its majors and minors, and the courses offered each year.
