Reading Workshop

Efficient reading does not come naturally to all students.  And like with playing an instrument or a sport, effective reading also takes time and practice.  Reading Workshop is designed to help struggling readers develop their reading rates, reading comprehension, reading speed, and vocabulary.

In this course, students will learn how to increase their reading rates (words/minute). Regardless of how well they read before, students can expect their reading rates to increase dramatically--100w.p.m. on average--while comprehension also increases.

Class time is devoted to individualized programs which assist students to learn to skim and scan, to recognize main ideas, to understand general principles, and to read critically, to perceive organizational patterns, and to study more efficiently.

Objectives of Reading Workshop are:

  • To develop independence in identifying unfamiliar words

  • To increase reading speed and comprehension

  • To improve attitudes about reading

  • To enhance recognition of the organizational patterns of readings

  • To improve the ability to evaluate the contents of materials

  • To develop concentration, recall, and effective study habits

Tips for success from the professor himself, Karl Elder:

  • Perfect attendance

  • Implementation of the principle of distributed practice (daily homework)

  • Up-to-date and accurate record keeping of performance on exercises

  • Willingness to adhere to instructions, act on advice, and try suggestions
