Writing Workshop
For many students, writing
is a difficult and sometimes scary task. Not only are
students expected to clearly express and support their ideas, they are also
expected to communicate
using correct grammatical structures. This combination causes problems for
many students; while a student may be strong in one area of writing he/she
may be weak in
another. That is why Lakeland offers Writing Workshop. This course teaches
students the fundamentals necessary for college writing and prepares
students to go on to upper level general studies writing courses: Expository
Writing: GEN 110 and Persuasive Writing: GEN 112.

Objective of Writing Workshop are:
-
To teach students to write grammatically
correct, complete sentences and well-developed paragraphs.
-
To encourage good writing habits through
frequent assignments and practices.
-
To teach basic organizational schemes and
to provide students with a method to write essays that contains an
introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
Tips for Success from
the Professors
General Tips:
-
Always ask questions when you don't
understand something in the textbook or when you don't understand
something the instructor says in the class.
-
Try to do all the homework in the course,
even if it seems too easy or difficult.
Writing Tips:
-
Writing is a process that improves with
time and practice--regular writing is important and multiple drafts are
necessary.
-
The big organizational picture sets the
foundation for essays and other writing--introduction, body, conclusion;
thesis statement; topic sentence.
-
Editing comes at the end and needs to be
carefully done--watching for errors the writer knows he/she is prone to;
editing from end to beginning; asking for help.
-
Consulting others increases the quality of
writing--asking classmates, writing tutors, roommates, etc. for feedback.

-
Always try to write in complete sentences:
-
Using correct spelling and punctuation
-
Paying attention to proper grammar
-
Preparing manuscripts neatly and with
care and professionalism
"Like swimming or
drawing or playing the flute, writing takes time to learn how to do well,
but progress is made with each and every lesson, and with practice one can
become a very skilled writer."--
