Testing Prospective Teachers

Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST)

In an effort to provide the state with a quality teaching force, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction must assure that prospective teachers demonstrate a minimum level of basic skills competency. Students who enrolled in Wisconsin colleges or universities after July 1, 1987, and who graduate after August 30, 1990, are required to pass basic skills tests in reading, writing, and mathematics before being admitted to programs leading to a license to teach in Wisconsin. These tests are the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST).

Praxis II: Subject Assessments

Wisconsin requires students who graduate from professional education programs after August 31, 2004 to take the Praxis II: Subject Assessment in their license area in order to qualify for a state education license. Requirments:

  • have passed the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) or been waived

  • have been admitted to an approved professional education program

  • have identified a teaching level or subject

Who Must Take these Tests:

All students planning to enroll in an initial professional education program in Wisconsin colleges or universities that leads to a license to teach in the state are required to pass the Praxis I: PPST in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. The tests are usually taken during the first or second year of undergraduate work depending on the institution's procedures.

All students who graduate from professional education programs after August 31, 2004 must take the Praxis II: Subject Assessment in their license area in order to qualify for a state education license. (The Praxis II: Subject Assessments may be taken on a no-fault basis by students who have passed the Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST), who have been admitted to an approved professional education program, and who have identified a teaching level or subject.)

Where to Take these Tests:

The Praxis I computer-based tests are offered by appointment through a national network of PrometricTM Testing Centers (many Prometric Testing Centers are located inside Sylvan Learning Centers), selected institutional sites, and ETS Field Service Offices. Visit Computer-Based Testing for the locations near you. Refer to The Praxis Series Registration Bulletin for paper and pencil PPST test centers and dates.

Test Requirements:

Note: The first digit of the Session/Test Code indicates the session during which the test is offered in the 2003-2004 testing year. There are no session numbers for the CBT tests, which are given by appointment, as explained in Praxis I Computer-Based Testing.
